As the national debate on immigration intensifies, National Public Radio's Hidden Brain podcast revisits a 2016 conversation with María Cristina García, the Howard A. Newman Professor in American Studies at Cornell and an expert in immigration and refugee migration in the Americas.
"Most immigrants who came to the United States did not immigrate to become American," she says. "In many cases immigrants came to replicate the best of the old country in more favorable circumstances."
In the conversation, Professor García corrects widely-held assumptions about earlier waves of immigrants the the US.
