Tamika Nunley Named Associate Professor and Sandler Family Faculty Fellow

On July 1st, 2022, Tamika Nunley was appointed to Associate Professor of History with indefinite tenure. She was also named a Sandler Family Faculty Fellow in the College of Arts & Sciences, which recognizes talented faculty members affiliated with the American Studies Program. 

Having received her M.A. and Ph.D. in African American Studies and History from Columbia University and University of Virginia, respectively, Nunley's research focuses on topics such as the African American identity, gender, slavery, nineteenth-century American history, and legal history. 

She also contributed to multiple publications such as At the Threshold of Liberty: Women, Slavery, and Shifting Identities in Washington, D.C., which was the winner of the 2021 Pauli Murray Book Prize and more. Currently, Nunley is finishing a second book titled The Demands of Justice: Enslaved Women, Capital Crime, and Clemency in Early Virginia, 1662-1865. 

Nunley will hold this position for a five-year period beginning July 1st, 2022 through June 30th, 2027.
